Eligibility & Application

The ELI welcomes non-native speakers of English who are at least 17 years old and have completed their secondary education. Students must be admitted or conditionally admitted to a U.S. university, or be able to document their reason for studying English. Professionals who wish to improve their English are also invited to attend.

The ELI courses focus on academic preparation for university or professional studies. Students who do not have a background in the fundamentals of English should attend other programs first. The Syracuse ELI program is not designed for absolute beginners.

Note: Acceptance at the English Language Institute does not constitute admission to a degree program at Syracuse University. Please understand that you must apply directly to Syracuse University. Interested students should e-mail the Syracuse University Admissions Office at Orange.syr.edu.
